Hello!
I just sat down and recorded a brief overview video of some of the changes and additions to Blender 2.5. Keep in mind, 2.5 is still under heavy development and many things will be added/changed. That being said, what has been done so far is incredible!
Enjoy!

Great comparison. I can only hope when it comes out, they have videoTexture working in ubuntu.
Thanks
Great video, don’t know what build you were using but I found a simpler way to get the 4 split. In the transform properties panel, without the object selected, you will see a button label “4-split view”. One click solves that, I am new to blender from maya and have been playing catch in 2.49a. Keep up the good work and look forward to another video if you decide to do a update.
I hate it. Stop changing the buttons! If it ain’t broke don’t fix it!
If you really want to help new users, change the dingy default lamp and bland blue background. Put some proper lamps in there as default, this way a new Blender user can simply hit render and get a nice scene, without much effort.
And the background in the ‘world buttons’ should be white, or you should put two or three options as possible backgrounds in ‘world buttons’ section for people to choose from. Also put a transparent shadow plane as standard, that way when you render your master piece, your character is already casting a proper shadow.
Background colour is already changed and you know it if you watched the video better….
Wow, that’s awesome. So theoretically with that last feature you mentioned, I could animate a cube to spin infinitely, and then lathe away at it with the sculpt tools, changing multi-res up and down as needed! Like working on a real lathe. That would be awesome. Can’t wait!
Wooooooooooooooo!
A change – for the better – this MASSIVE: this should be Blender 3.
See what you mean about edit buttons: set smooth/solid should be in materials (IMO)
SEARCH FUNCTION IS SO GOOD!
How about a 4-way view in the views menu at the top…?
Actually quick review of that:
Model – where I generally start
Animation – what the view ends up looking like once I’ve used it a bit
Material – Looks more like – NEARLY a 4-way view. Not really what you want for materials. Does anyone use this? For editing materials you want more like one viewport and material and texture buttons next to each other.
Sequence – Bang on. Very useful.
Scripting – I don’t really do scripting, but this looks quite useful.
get video!
I’ve been playing round in 2.5 as well. I noticed your little hitch in the window organization, and thought I’d share my experiences with how to merge two windows together: When you click on the hashes in the top-right and lower-left corners of a window, dragging INTO that window will split it, but dragging OUT OF that window will merge it into the adjacent window.
Great vid!
The voice is clear, and even french people can easily understand the speach.
Now you use a bettre microphone
I hope there will be more enthusiastic vid like this.
Don’t hesitate to make more until 2.5. A summary is always useful.
You’re more than welcome.
Great stuff!
I was hoping you would demonstrate the awesome new feature where you can right click a field to add a keyframe for it. Then again, the pure awesomeness could have caused many exploded minds and thrown chairs, so perhaps it was for the best
Evolving nicely, thanks for all the work from the developers. Some of the features I wouldn’t use personally, like the ability to run an animation while editing a model, but still this is looking better all the time.
nice, here is a list of keyboard shortcuts for current development of blender

@Roger.
Hate is such a strong word save it for more important things like war, poverty, famine etc!
Did you know that you can make all the UI and configuration changes you like and save them as your default startup? The kind Blender developers have made a platform that is good for everyone and allowed us all the opportunity to customise it in our own way.
@ Roger
The problem is, Blender IS broken… its UI is inconsistent, difficult to understand, inefficient, etc…
Personally I’m looking very forward to 2.5, it looks so much easier to use, nicer to look at, quicker to work with, and basically… awesome.
Good work
You forgot to show off the coolest thing. Editing the Python scripts for the layout, to see the effects in real time.

i dun think 2.49 was thaaat bad, but i do like the improvements on the layout. its looking a little ‘modo’ like, jeje nice
You guys are doing such a huge great job, thanks a very lot I am soooo exited!!!

If Blender is going to be like that, i will switch to maya or max…
First UNDO…..now this……no really looks cool….just don’t forget where ya started from..
Cant w8 for it
it looks awesome
and love the search function for commands
Great video, you convinced me! =) At first I thought “Sure, it looks good, but seems impractical” but through the video I started thinking the opposite when I saw how things where organized and you’re right, things were too split up.
However on your comment about the grease pencil think of this: If you have a pencil which you (as far as I’ve seen) only paint in the viewport (or with a setting, also in the 3d environment) wouldn’t you put it somewhere together with other viewport options? I can’t really understand how it would’t be supposed to be there!
Looks really awesome.
I like the general dark theme, and the menu structure.
its good that its now more similar to other 3d apps like max or maya etc. Makes it allot easier to swap between different 3d apps. sometimes being very original and different from others isnt good.
what id really like to see in blender 2.5 or in future is support for align/snapping, like in google sketchup.(u hover mouse over one vert, and when u move ur mouse off, it draws an imaginary line that is alligned to it on some XYZ plane.)
and second thing thats in my wish list for some time now is adding infinite shape keys either via menus or via python script. (2.49 python allowed setting up to 100 or something keys)
It would be ultimate animation feature if blender could automatically create a shape key(in every x secons,or distance mouse has moved), while sculpting.

I just hope there will be many tutorials, and 100% compatibility with the previous versions.
@Roger: Those are some issues, but if you think that’s what needs changing, reset your own defaults.
On a similar note, make the damn default specularity zero!
This looks really amazing! I hope moving from 2.49 to 2.5 is no too difficult
Look I think the video was great.
as a “commercial” user, all I can say is well done, its leaps and bounds better.
What I was waiting to hear was ALT Key Navigation. Thats a MUST.
To help migrate as you say “commercial” users to Blender, it’s got to be in there.
There can be the current system too, so don’t panic.
But some of the things mentioned are there the layout, the split windows, but please DONT forget the NAVIGATION.
I dont know how many times I’ve seen (me included) commercial users throw Blender out just because of that. Cant pick up and go. Thats the way the commercial world is now, instant productivity required. That’s why you must have it in there, to change Blender from an alternative, to a player.
I thought the joke, “that’s gonna make modeling tough”, was a great line.
Well done to all, great video, I’ll be looking at this when its released.
Yeah – it looks so great!
But how do you “set smooth”
By the way Blender has always been great…
I’m lookin forward for it…
But the big thing i wating for is the MATERIAL EDITOR…!!!
The old one is very confuse me…n so bad…!!
would that be material editor look like in MAX, present on Blender 2.5???
The good thing on Max’s material editor is the material slots…!!! we can easy mix our material on their own slot, n easy to maintenance…
hope the B25 would be fix it..
but the other looks great can’t wait fot it..
GBU…
tnk u
Oh. My. God.
That looks damn sexy, and actually usable.
Not that the old versions weren’t, but the learning curve seriously put me off every time I’ve attempted to switch.
I came across this video because I recently installed 2.9, and went in search of alternative GUI’s (I’m an optimist).
During that search, I found that the blender forum ‘regulars’ were absolutely elitist.
Whenever there was a complaint (valid, or just .. complaining) about the GUI (lets face it… the learning curve moving from alternative 3d modelling/animation is extreme), the regulars would respond in an .. unsympathetic manner.
I can only imagine how many people, looking to switch to open source, were put off by the GUI, and the ‘community’ (read: exclusive club).
On that note, currently there are very few open source projects that really *do* succeed at decent UI design, but that appears to be changing (look at some of the newer Linux Distro’s, my grandparents could almost use ‘em!). Thank god for that.
All hail 2.5
(@Mike Futcher: It should be blender3, especially if it’s rebuilt from the ground up)
Great to see this video Jonathan! I was pretty intimidated from what I’ve seen of the revamped UI, but since your tutorials pretty much single handidly taught me character modeling in Blender, you were just the person to demystify the updates for me. Thanks!
I’m thrilled to hear my tutorials and such have been helpful to you
Hey, who moved my cheese?!?!
No, wait, it looks nice
AWWWWWWWWWWWaWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! right!!!!!!!!!! more than 5 hi fives–well thought out–highly professional, one of the best I have seen–Jonathan should be proud of this–a major contribution to the blender community
